I Saw Three Ships for Brass Quintet
- Instrumentation: 2 Tpts, Hn, Tbn, Tba
- Year Written: 2002
- Duration: c. 1.5m
This joyful and whimsical arrangement of I Saw Three Ships is from a time when I was experimenting with different harmonic approaches. You'll hear not just traditional harmony, but quartal harmony, jazz harmony, and even bitonal harmony.
In fact, a colleague once jokingly referred it as "I Saw Three Ships Colliding!"
But if they do collide, it's just a graze, because each section quickly moves into the next, and the overall effect is fun and enjoyable for both the performer and audience. It also works at a range of tempos, so feel free to fly through it, or lay back a little.
Your choice.
